Non-corporeal He has practiced the charm, but it hasn't taken form yet. | To be head editor of the Daily Prophet. | Spiders. Lawrence associates spiders with dirty, dusty surroundings. He hates anything dirty. |
Lawrence is a shining example of a pretty boy who thinks very highly of himself. He is vain, judgemental, narrow-minded and loves to talk about everyone behind their backs; assuming that they're interesting enough to be spoken about. He can be very condescending, sort of malicious and enjoys showing people their flaws; while pretending that he doesn't get a kick out of it. Preferring the company of girls (and often finding other boys intimidating or difficult to converse with), Lawrence could be regarded as quite effeminate, but not to the point where it is difficult to determine his gender.
He likes being a boy. Just, very occasionally, he likes to dress in girl's clothes. A very safe-guarded secret he keeps to himself.
In that sense, Lawrence isn't as bold as he makes himself out to be. Underneath there is a sheep, and a deep insecurity. He may be 'typically camp', but the fact is he doesn't like discussing his sexuality. He has never openly come out as homosexual, although many could argue that its painstakingly obvious. There is still a controversy within pureblood society to be gay; despite his family not being one-hundred percent committed to pureblood fanatical ideology. He doesn't buy into it, particularly not the killing muggles and muggleborns part, although he still acts like he is a lot better than you.
Lawrence is materialistic, superficial and looks down his nose at people. But, really, deep down; he knows he is no where near perfect. He's no high achiever (a solid A-and-E-grader) and isn't the best chaser the slytherin quidditch team has ever known, but he still enjoys the sport. He likes to take away the 'rough and sporty' stereotype associated with quidditch, and prove to people that it can be played with class.
So, in short; Lawrence is a sort of bitch. He likes to try and manipulate people and get them on his side, but he is no pro at being charming and the powers of convincing. There is a tender spot inside of him that can be hit with the right words and actions, and some people could probably have him wrapped around their fingers. Not that he'd like that. He likes to think that people follow him.
History
Lawrence Baddock was born, tow-headed and blue-eyed; both features expected to be lost in late childhood. Unlike his sisters, however, Lawrence remained fair and flaxen; much to the pleasure of his Mother. He was born in late April at home in the charming Cotswolds of England, where his Mother and Father owned a thatched-roof cottage that appeared smaller on the outside than it was inside. See, when it came to wizards, they couldn't resist showing off. The Baddock family were no exception. They had so many charms on their house that muggles coming across the vicinity of their land would feel varying states of urgency to get away, and quickly.
The Baddock family were purebloods. While they did exhibit behaviours expected of pureblood lineage, such as bigotry and materialism; they had no interest in dark magic. Malcolm Baddock (Lawrence's father) was all about keeping up appearances, as was his wife Ciara. They were all about having the best of the best, and intimidating others by projecting (what they thought of as) a flawless image. Lawrence vividly recalls wearing garments that were stiff and uncomfortable, but incredibly elegant. His sisters wore pretty, layered frocks custom made by foreign wizardwear designers.
He always preferred what they wore. He was six when he tried one of the dresses on for size. His older sister, Dianne, was the one who caught him in the act.
Fortunately for him, his Dianne was very good at keeping secrets. She was a kind, self-sacrificing and brilliant mind, his sister. It was a shame that she was such a disappointment to the family. She had never demonstrated magic through childhood, and on her eleventh birthday she received a letter from the Ministry informing her, and her parents, that she would be unable to attend Hogwarts school. Dianne Baddock was a squib, and now all the associating pureblood families knew about it.
The atmosphere in their household changed dramatically after that. Mr and Mrs Baddock tried to convince their daughter that they still loved her, despite her 'impediment'. But his sister was still made to feel as though she was second-class within their narrow-minded society, and it was up to her to try and make a life for herself. At the age of thirteen, Dianne ran away from home. She frequently wrote to her parents and siblings informing them that she was fine, and that she had decided to join muggle society where she could actually fit in.
At first, Lawrence was angered by the lack of drive his parents had to get their daughter back. It was almost as if they were relieved of her burden. But it soon became clear that Dianne was happier living in this 'group home' in muggle London, and Lawrence slowly convinced himself that it was for the best.
It was strange how her absence made everything go back to normal. His parents suddenly started opening their home again to their high-society friends, and very soon their superior attitudes came back and greater than ever. Even though Lawrence felt sorry for Dianne, he couldn't help but enjoying a life full of the better things. Families began to respect the Baddocks once more, and Lawrence loved to talk in that lar-de-dar kind of way that others seemed to be intimidated by for all the right reasons.
They were rich, they were classy, they were enviable.
Well, he thought he was enviable. When he started attending Hogwarts however, even those in the same house as him teased him a bit. They said that he sounded effeminate. Lawrence wasn't particularly bothered by the interest surrounding his sexuality, and through the years (once they all got used to him) the petty jabs died down as students matured. Most students seemed convinced that he was gay, but Lawrence himself never really thought about it properly until his sixth year.
Despite his character, Lawrence was actually quite good at Quidditch. He insisted that it wasn't the rough-and-tumble sport that people thought it was; and that it could actually be very stylish, very acrobatic, and quite elegant. Plus: if someone knocked his hair out of place, he was always keen to retaliate. When he became chaser of the team at the beginning of his sixth-year, people were unconvinced of his abilities. In fact; a lot of people envisioned him hovering on the spot and braiding his hair, or something.
No: he took Quidditch quite seriously. He also took his male team mates very seriously, when he realised a strong attraction for them. But the idea of kissing anyone grossed him out a little. He acts like a bit of a prude, but in reality he is holding back a whole lot of need...
So what with his NEWT studying, quidditch games and practice and his involvement with the school newspaper; Lawrence is a fairly busy person nowadays. And, for a moment, he felt in his element.
But the mass killings that happened this Spring has brought a new feeling of terror in Lawrence that he thought he'd lost. Although it isn't necessarily common knowledge that his sister Dianne is a squib; he has a feeling that that information could easily fall into the wrong circle. As much as he isn't involved with his sister's life anymore, he still worries for her safety; and his family's. These people are capable of so much more than what they have already achieved...
